A hui for librarians in our Kāhui Ako was held on Thursday 27th October 2022. It was attended by librarians, or staff members in charge of the library, from 10 of our kura.
The meeting was a great opportunity to network, share ideas and resources and discuss ways to support each other. A particular focus of the hui was thinking about creating pathways and connections within and across schools in the Kāhui Ako. We shared the findings from an open university survey about children's reading choices, which led to a discussion around how promary school libraries impact children's interest in reading at secondary schools and later in life. This is turn prompted talk around the importance of knowing students' reading interests in order to engage them in reading, and how useful it would be to share this information between schools as students transition from one school to another. It was decided to create a survey about reading interests to be completed by Year 6 and Year 8 students, and then collate and share the information gleaned in the survey.
All participants in the hui found it to be a valuable chance to connect and are keen to make it a regular event in the Kāhui Ako calendar.
